Pickpockets & Parties: My Barcelona Pride Mishap

The Friday night festivities at Avenida de la Reina María Cristina were a blast! Music pulsed, the atmosphere was electric, and the night was filled with laughter and dance. We moved on to one of the many fantastic gay bars in the Gaixample district. (But remember, pickpockets can be anywhere, so don't let your guard down, even in the midst of Pride celebrations.)

The night unfolded perfectly, filled with good company and vibrant energy. However, as we hailed a taxi in the wee hours of the morning, a pit formed in my stomach. My phone – gone. Devastated, I retraced my steps back to the bar, but there was no sign of it.

A Stolen Phone and a Lesson Learned

The next day, my local friends took charge, hoping to help me recover my phone. We headed to the Apple Store, but they were unable to assist with the recovery process. Next, we called Apple support from my friend's phone. However, the two-factor authentication became a major hurdle. Without access to another Apple device, I couldn't receive the verification code, leaving us stuck.

We managed to temporarily change the number associated with my account to my friend's phone, but that wasn't enough. To mark the phone as stolen, I needed access to my iCloud account, which wasn't on me at the time. Disappointed but determined, I decided to wait and call Apple support again once I was back home in the UK with my laptop.

Back at our accommodation, the frustration continued. A seemingly legitimate text message arrived, claiming to be from Apple. It said my phone was found and offered location details, but required logging into my iCloud account. This, unfortunately, turned out to be a classic phishing attempt. People, be extremely cautious of such messages!

In my haste to find my phone, I fell into the trap. After entering my details, the screen went white, and nothing happened. As it turned out, the moment I entered my information, my phone was remotely wiped from my iCloud account. The worst part? Without proof of ownership (due to the wiped phone being removed from my account), claiming insurance became impossible.

By the time I reached home and contacted Apple support again, the damage was done. There was little they could do to help at that point. To make matters worse, I hadn't filed a police report in Barcelona, leaving me with no official record of the theft.
